Heated Eyelash Curler vs Mechanical Eyelash Curler
April 26th, 2008
This is an answer for Angie, who commented on my recent guide “How To Curl Your Eyelashes“, and asked about heated eyelash curlers. I personally never used one, but since it may interest more persons I made some research and I hope this little article will help. I tell you right now, I prefer a mechanical eyelash curler, and I’m going to tell you why.
I myself use an eyelash curler that I heat with my hairdryer, it’s fast. All I have to do is to check it’s not too warm by touching the metal. I, and you too, don’t want to burn our eyelids. So if it’s too hot I just wait a few seconds and it’s fine. With time you know how long your hairdryer should warm your eyelash curler.
The advantage of using a heated eyelash curler is of course it heat up to the right temperature, or at least it should. You have to wait the curler to heat up, but I’ve read some heated devices are too hot, so always be careful. Of course some are just fine, but I don’t have try them all (none actually).
Also what may be disappointing is that it doesn’t curl any better than a plain one. It’s true, when you think about it, the system is the same : you put your eyelashes between two pads and clamp. Some women even don’t need heat because their lashes are not that straight.
Since you certainly don’t carry your hairdryer in your handbag, the heated curler could be a solution if you think about curling often during the day, at work or anywhere. But if done occasionally, I’d still recommend a mechanical eyelash curler. Of course if using the hairdryer everyday is not cool for you then, I guess you would want a heated one.

Now, what about the budget ? Well, I thought a heated eyelash curler would be far more expensive than a traditional one but not really. Of course, the one I mentioned in the guide, at Eyes Lips Face is only $1 (right picture), so this is obviously the cheapest and lots of people seem to agree it works really great, one review actually says it’s even better than some top brand curlers.
Most of eyelash curlers look like any other eyelash curler. the more I look at them, the less I see differences. However, according to Sephora, the best sellers are the shu uemura eyelash curlers, the standard one is $19 and the mini version is $17 (cool for small eyelashes) and few people agree to say they are the best eyelash curlers. Sephora also have their own eyelash curlers, including a heated one, only $16, and a Curler and Comb Duo at only $5.
Almost all curlers at Sephora are around $15 - $20 (no more), which remains cheap. For more heated eyelash curlers, I suggest you visit SpaLook, there are currenly 2 curlers but a bit more expensive, by Blinc at $24, by Talika at $37.
To conclude, what I’ve read and learnt makes me think I will not use a heated eyelash curler for now, as it doesn’t curl better than a mechanical one. But depending of the frequency and use, some people may want some automatic heat as the difference between prices is not so big.

Wow, you wrote this just for me (jk)! Thanks anyway. I still haven’t chosen between heated or not (yeah, this means I still don’t have an eyelash curler). But you’re right the price is not really bigger than a plain one.

Hi. I wanted to post my findings on eyelash curlers because I have problem of another kind.. I bought and started using LiLash about 8 weeks ago and it has made my lashes thicker and there are about five or so individual lashes that are longer in each eyelid which is really giving the appearance of lengthy lashes. I LOVE it!! But my problem is that I’m a black woman and naturally have “curly” or “kinky” hair so while my lashes are growing nicely, they are also CURLING up so much that they loop around and it makes them appear SHORT. So while they’re longer, you really can’t see the length! And its driving me berzerk. So I searched the internet for an eyelash “straightener” and found nothing. I figured okay… maybe I can get a regular eyelash curler and somehow use it backwards so that it bends my lashes away from my eyelid instead of them curling INTO my eyelid! No such luck. So I thought I’d get a heated curler and use that as a “straightener” the way a chi-iron straightens hair. It works but only a little bit and i am afraid to use it too much for fear of heat damage to my lashes. Any suggestions???

Hi Kim,
glad to hear LiLash workd for you too. Regarding your question (that’s a tough question !), I would have the idea of using the eyelash curler backwards but no success you said.
Have you tried putting mascara on the tip of lashes, it may add weight to the lashes ?

Interesting idea… putting mascara on the tips only. Never thought of that. I’ll try it and report back !
